- LIFE GOAL(S)
-
- One of the primary reasons people have a hard time determining their
- best career choice is because they have never determined what
- their life goal is. A well defined life goal will provide both
- direction and enthusiasm. A life goal should be clear and to the
- point.
-
- The ideal life goal will provide inspiration over a lifetime.
- Normally, a life goal is a personal desire that provides greater
- direction and purpose in a person's daily life.
-
- It is easy to confuse a life goal with other aspirations. Buying a
- home or earning a college degree are not normally life goals.
-
- While one's life goal and career may be one in the same, this is not
- always the case. A life goal is usually of a more personal nature
- and of a larger scope. As an example, a life goal may be to help
- others learn, while the actual career may be teaching.
-
- Your life goal could be to:
- Raise a happy family.
- Raise animals.
- Become wealthy.
- Help humanity.
- Make people happy.
- Build a dream house, ranch, or business.
- Achieve recognition for creative effort.
- Gain power.
- Prepare for a carefree retirement.
-
- Having a life goal can motivate an individual to make the best
- possible career search. Careers can be selected that help support
- the life goal, either in the short term or the long term.
-
- Selecting a life goal is seldom easy. However, if you stick with
- it, you can usually bring it to the surface. To help, answer
- the following:
-
- 1. What do you really want to accomplish in life that will provide
- a lasting sense of fulfillment?
-
- 2. Assuming it is the end of your life, what do you wish that you
- had done earlier in your life?
-
- Before starting a career search, it is important to establish at
- least a tentative life goal. Once selected, a life goal is not set
- in cement. As a person grows older, his/her life goal may change.
-
- Your selected life goal, at this time, need not completely satisfy
- you, but it should at least assist you in finding the best possible
- current career choice. A person will often have more than one life
- goal.
-
- Spend at least 30 to 60 minutes reviewing the two questions listed
- above, and write your life goal(s) out on the "Life Goal Analysis"
- form printed earlier in the print section.
